Keep Your Distance. Remember that old saying? Well never has that concept been more important than it is today, especially when considering your personal self defense.
After all, if you don't hold a black belt in some form of martial arts, the more distance you can put between a potential threat and yourself, the better. But how can you get an attacker's attention when they have already started to make their move at you?
There are several devices that can get someone's attention. Keys between the fingers. Mace. A gun. All of those things might work but they all have some problems.
If you have to use your car keys then you are going to be in close quarter combat. You and your attacker are going to get into it face-fo-face. There is nothing scarier and if you bend the key, you may not be able to start your car and get away.
Mace or pepper spray can give you a little more room but keep in mind, when you use it, you can expose yourself to the affects of it, too. It's airborne protection and it spreads into the air when it is discharged. In fact, some people have gotten so wrapped up in the moment that they aim the device in the wrong direction and give themselves a shot of mace or pepper spray in the face. Not very effective for personal self defense.
Any attacker will certainly take a gun very seriously. A gun can and will stop people dead in their tracks. But did you hit the right person? Was that kind of lethal force necessary?
Most people couldn't hit a trash can lid at 50 feet. It takes practice to learn how to use a gun properly. Plus, there are lots of place where you cannot take it and if you do, you become the criminal.
So what can you do to protect yourself and get away without killing someone or an innocent bystander, or disabling yourself?
Try a taser. For less than the cost of a good gun, you now have one of the best personal self defense products available. It looks and feels like a gun but instead of shooting bullets, a taser shoots a dart-like projectile designed to stick in the body. Once it does, you release a non-lethal electrical charge that will immobilize your attacker and allow you to get away. The attacker drops like a rock and you run like a bunny. Best of all, you can use a taser at distances up to 20 feet so you don't end up in hand-to-hand combat.
Tasers can be effective tools for law enforcement officers and homeland security personnel. Sheriffs and police officers often find them very handy. However, tasers are not legal in all states so it is important you check regulations before you start carrying one.
If you want someone to keep their distance, a taser pointed in their direction will get the job done.
